3 Steps To Starting A Promising Career

There is a saying that if you are doing what you love, the money will follow. It might be a folklore wisdom, but it cannot be further from the truth. Because if you love to collect seashells, I would like to see you become filthy rich from it.

We are all working for financial rewards. There is no doubt about it. If you do something you love and don’t get paid for it, you are not going love what you are doing as soon as the first month comes to a close. If you are promised $5000 a week whether you work or not, I’m pretty sure you will chose not to work.

This leads to the concept of a career. A pursuit of a glittering career has nothing to do with whether you love the job or not. You are doing it for the money and benefits packed into your salary. And because of how expensive the cost of living is becoming these days, career planning is as important as the career itself.

Here are 3 simple steps to make sure you get off on the right foot.

Visualize the long term

It can sound a little cliché to ask you to envision what and where you see yourself in 10 years. But that is exactly what you need to do in order to get your focus right. Have a goal in your mind.

Don’t pick a job just because it pays well at entry level. Jobs that have a high entry salary are usually those that have a low ceiling. Just look at sales jobs. Many of them don’t even pay a fixed salary and staff re remunerated by commissions instead. And as you might already know, salespeople are some of the highest paid professionals around. It wouldn’t be a surprise to find that the best salesperson draws a higher salary than the best doctor.

Choose a field that you can see yourself following through with it in the long term. Because the longer you stay in the same industry, the more relevant experience you would have in it. This not only leads to better hiring terms in future, it also means that you are better equipped to perform well in an organization in that particular industry.

Be prepared to start from the ground floor

You cannot really expect to get a management position from the start. Even if you somehow got there from the start, you will likely fail miserably within 6 months. You need to embrace your rookie status and experience.

The best managers, including the most high profile famous names, started from the bottom. And they become spectacular successes because working their way up from the bottom allows them to understand a business and industry in a way that many people cannot. In fact, it could be better for your career in the long term to start from the beginning even if you are offered a higher position.

By having the inside knowledge of how an industry functions and how a business operates, you will have the critical skills and know-how of what needs to be done to take a business to the next level.

We sometimes paint the picture of a flying career once we graduate with a degree. That is seldom the case when you enter the workforce. Don’t let your exuberance blind yourself from the real world.

Learn whatever you can

In a market that is extremely competitive, the competitive edge a company has over another is it’s people. People bring culture, innovation, knowledge, decisiveness, etc.

To become one of those employees who can make a difference, you need to excel in what you do. And you achieve that by learning and picking up new skills as you are working. Some important skills to enhance are people skills, communication skills, problem solving, etc.

The 3 steps listed above apply to any industry you are entering. Maintain a good attitude in applying them and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You learn better that way. Remember that your objective is the long term goals which you have identified. Every progress you make is a step towards your ultimate goals.
